Carmen Rosa Shuan Vega

Community leader
Huaraz region, Peru
As president of the "Comité de Regante" and member of the "Coordinadora Regional de Comunidades Afectadas por la Minería (CORECAMI - Apurímac), Carmen Rosa Shuan has been leading her community's protests against mining activities on their ancestral lands. As such, she has been fighting for proper consultation processes, in line with the ILO Convention 169, and for more transparency about the expected social and environmental impacts, especially on water resources in the region. In response, she has been charged for "serious" crimes and is facing, along with 17 other community leaders, the possibility of a prison sentence. Her testimony will focus on this growing trend in which local community who defend their rights are being criminalised
